It’s well-known that veganism is beginning to take over the world. But some countries are indeed more ahead than others. 

This post is going to cover some of the most vegan-friendly countries around the world. Some may surprise you. 

Australia

Australia is famous for its kangaroo meat, meringue, but also Joey Carbstrong. 

In fact, Australia is home to 2.5 million vegans and vegetarians, with 6% of the population being vegan. Over the past 10 years, the number has increased by about 50%.

Canada

The national dish of Canada is a cheese-based meal called “poutine”. They’re also heavy on their bacon, beavertail and other meat-based foods. 

However, around 10% of the country claim to be vegan/vegetarian, meaning there are plenty of options to choose from if you were to visit the country. 

The best cities to visit for vegans in Canada include: Toronto, Victoria and Guelph. 

France

Although they’re notorious lovers of cheese and other meat-based foods, France is pretty solid in regards to vegan options. 

Around 5% of the French population is vegan. Meaning veganised cheeses, croissants, and other goodies. 

The best cities to visit for vegans in France include: Paris, Bordeaux and Lyon. 

Germany

Germany is for sure ahead of their time with their approach to vegan options, although they are better known for their sausages and other meaty foods. 

About 3.2% of the German population is vegan, but this doesn’t mean that they don’t cater to us. The best vegan cities in Germany include: Hamburg, Mannheim, Aachen & Heidelburg.

India

Indian cuisine actually has a large proportion of their food vegan by default, if it wasn’t for their love of ghee. That being said, India is one of the biggest collective vegetarian nations on the planet. 

A whopping 9% of their 1.4 billion population is vegan, with 24% of the population being at least vegetarian – How’s that for numbers?

Indonesia

According to a recent survey ran, 73% of respondents claimed to consume plant-based options over animal-derived foods. 

Indonesia is well-known for their use of tempeh and proper veggies options, one of my personal favourite places to go for takeout. 

Best cities in Indonesia for vegans include: Jakarta, Ubud, Bali and many more. 

Ireland

Although not as notorious a vegan nation, Ireland is a country worth mentioning. Around 2-4% of Irish citizens are vegan. 

Best cities in Ireland to visit for vegans include: Dublin, Dundalk, Cork, Limerick & Galway. 

Japan

Japan is a country well known for their healthy lifestyle. Vegans make up around 3% of their population, with vegetarians making up 9%. 

The best vegan cities in Japan include: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Sapporo, to name a few. 

Mexico

Mexico is known for their tacos, and other spicy foods that typically use meat as their filler. That being said, Mexico also has a lot of vegan options when you leave out the meat and cheese. 

In Mexico, 9% of its inhabitants are vegan, with a whopping 19% following at least a vegetarian diet. 

The best vegan cities in Mexico include: Playa del Carmen, Mexico City, and La Paz. 

Netherlands

Although they’re more famous for their cheese, croquettes and meat and veggies, the Netherlands actually has a surprising amount of vegan options in their main capital cities. 

Vegans only make up 1% of the total population, and vegetarians make up 5%. 

The best cities for vegan visitors include: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, The Hague, and Utrecht. 

United States

The US is a massive country, and has so much farmland, making it so fresh veg and fruit can be provided to their inhabitants, year-round. 

About 6% of the population is vegan, of 300 million, so that’s pretty significant. 

The best states to visit for vegan food in the USA include: Maryland, Washington DC, Texas, Colorado and California (especially).

UK

The UK has long since changed their ways of eating pasties and sausages, well, not everyone of course. It’s estimated that around 3% of UK citizens are vegan, with 7% adopting a vegetarian diet. 

The best cities in the UK to visit for vegans include: Brighton, London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leicester. 

Thailand

Thailand is famous for its sun, sea and fresh tropical fruits. Around 8% of people are reported to not eat meat. 

The best cities for vegans include: Bangkok, Koh Tao and Chiang Mai.
